Every time we cite a paper, we’re signaling which journals matter. The academic publishing landscape today is increasingly dominated by for-profit journals, and our analysis shows that citation practices tend to reinforce this dominance, sidelining non-profit journals that are equally essential for knowledge diversity. This further suggests that our citation behavior may be influenced more by journal visibility than scientific relevance. We advocate for greater awareness and ‘strategic citation’ to move towards a more balanced, fairer academic landscape.
