Prud'homme, F.; Theau, J.P.; Sirami, C. (2026). Floreal 2.2: a tool linking plant functional traits to agroecological indicators for grassland assessment.34ième conférence European Vegetation Survey (EVS) , 7 au 11 septembre, Clermont-Ferrand, France (communication orale)

Abstract:
Natural grasslands represent a major conservation priority in France and across Europe, as they host high levels of biodiversity while providing multiple ecosystem services essential for livestock farming and rural landscapes. Addressing the challenges of conserving these habitats requires stronger dialogue between ecologists, agronomists, and farmers, as well as tools capable of translating ecological knowledge into operational indicators for grassland management and policy evaluation (1). In this context, the Floreal tool was developed in 2021 to bridge plant ecology and agroecological assessment. Floreal is based on phytosociological vegetation surveys and uses a plant functional trait database (FlorealData) (2) to compute agroecological indicators (FlorealIndices) (3) describing the ecological and agronomic properties of grassland plant communities. The new version, Floreal 2.2 (2026), is a free and open-access tool that substantially improves the robustness and analytical capabilities of the initial version. This new version also considerably expands the geographical scope of the tool. The FlorealData database currently includes 34 functional traits documented for 990 plant species, compiled from the scientific literature. These traits are used to generate 30 agroecological indicators that characterize key ecosystem services provided by grasslands, including species diversity, ecological specialization, ecological indicator values, productivity, management flexibility, forage phenology, attractiveness to pollinators and butterflies, and landscape and cultural value. Two user-friendly interfaces allow the operational use of Floreal 2.2 for both field diagnosis and large-scale ecological assessments. The first is a smartphone-based application designed to support in-field diagnosis of grasslands together with farmers or agricultural advisors (floreal.cbnpmp.fr). The second is an online platform enabling the computation of agroecological indicators for large vegetation datasets (floreal.desktop.cbnpmp.fr). The tool can be applied to grassland diagnosis and monitoring at multiple spatial scales, ranging from individual fields and farms to territories or public policy frameworks. Floreal is currently used to support farmer-advisor dialogue, to assess agri-environmental schemes, and to monitor the conservation status and restoration of habitats of European interest, including within Natura 2000 sites and in the context of the European Nature Restoration Law. By linking vegetation surveys, functional trait data, and agroecological indicators, Floreal provides an operational framework for integrating plant community ecology into grassland management, biodiversity conservation, and environmental policy evaluation across France and potentially throughout Europe.
